Using renewable resources and other capabilities to harvest, generate, store, transmit and reuse energy to sustain growing energy needs.

Since the energy crisis in the 1970s, society has longed to make alternative power sources competitive to fossil fuels, due to their availability and being environmentally friendly.

Alternative energy resources, such as solar, wind, biomass, ocean, geothermal and hydroelectric, can help counteract climate change, the environmental impacts of population growth and the depletion of the planet’s fossil fuels.

There are numerous organizations with government, academia, and commercial sectors that are looking to expand their research within the alternative energy realm. Most of the research is dedicated towards improving efficiency and increasing overall energy yields.

In response to the increasing demand for alternative energy, the Department of Defense is focused on reducing its dependency on fossil fuels and deploying 3 gigawatts of renewable energy to power military facilities by 2025. Use of alternative energy resources will reduce costs, minimize risks and attain energy security.
