Presented: July 18, 2018 2:00 pm
Presented by: Ray Wagner, Ph.D.

This webinar discusses the use of low-power, long-lifecycle, and low-mass radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for homeland defense-related sensoring applications. Presented by Raymond Wagner, Ph.D., a Wireless RFID Sensing Engineer at NASA Johnson Space Center, the webinar presents findings from the Internal Radio-frequency Instrumentation System (IRIS) program’s use of RFID thermocouples inside the heat shield of the Orion Exploration Mission-2 (EM-2) crewed spacecraft. Wagner examines IRIS’ success in producing “passive” RFID sensors capable of operating for nearly a decade in low-power hibernation. Advancing fully wireless instrumentation systems like IRIS may also significantly enhance the Department of Defense’s ability to track the flow of materials and supplies, or even to monitor the physiological status of warfighters in the field.
